Media owners’ await BBMP’s decision on media selection for Covid19 campaign

By M4G Bureau - July 21, 2020

The pending decision on the selection of media is adding to the worries of media owners

In spite of the permission given by the Karnataka High Court to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to roll out Covid19 awareness OOH campaign, there is no relief for the local outdoor industry as the corporation is yet to decide on the selection of media.

The corporation is contemplating on the use of large format media, which has been ‘nullified’ two years back in Bangalore. Also, many structures were taken down by the BBMP in the backdrop of beautification of the city. Hence, there are only a few structures left which can be employed in the campaign.

This is not the end to the media owners’ problems as a reshuffle has been seen in the corporation. BH Anil Kumar serving as the commissioner, BBMP from August last year has been replaced by N Manjunath Prasad, who has taken charge with immediate effect. N Manjunath Prasad, an IAS officer of 1994 batch has had served as BBMP commissioner earlier.

It is pertinent to note that during his tenure all forms of advertisements- hoardings, banners, flexes, buntings, posters and even wall painting/writing have been banned and considered illegal as BBMP had not renewed licence to any media owning agency. This has adversely affected Bengaluru outdoor industry.

Last week, the court has given nod for the campaign, with strict norms to be followed, in order to spread awareness regarding precautionary measures to be adopted. For which, the media selection is expected to be announced by next week.
