BMC set to take over maintenance of 24 skywalks from MMRDA

By Hema Tiwari - December 22, 2014

BMC will earn an estimated Rs 100 crore as annual advertising revenue from the 24 skywalks

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to transfer the advertising rights on 24 skywalks in Mumbai's metropolitan area to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). With it, BMC will earn an estimated Rs 100 crore as annual advertising revenue from the 24 skywalks.

MMRDA had spent around Rs 700 crore to develop 36 skywalks, 24 of which are in the metropolitan area. MMRDA also incurs a monthly expenditure of Rs 50,000 for the maintenance of each skywalk that adds up to a large amount. Yet, the skywalks are not properly maintained.

In 2012, then MMRDA Commissioner Rahul Asthana had written to BMC stating that the body wanted to hand over the maintenance of the skywalks to the latter. An MMRDA official said that the 24 skywalks in the metropolitan area will now be transferred to BMC with full advertising and leasing rights on the structures.

A senior BMC official also said the body is set to take over the skywalks. Against this backdrop, S O Kori, Chief Engineer of the Bridges Department of BMC said that before taking over the maintenance, BMC and MMRDA will conduct joint inspection of the skywalks to assess the current state of the structures. This process is likely to take about three months.
