Out of Home landmarks the BFI IMAX, Piccadilly Lights and screens across Westfield London and Westfield Stratford City will power down to mark Earth Hour this weekend (Saturday, March 22 at 8.30pm).

The outdoor locations are joining other prominent landmarks including the London Eye, the Tate museums and Buckingham Palace in a symbolic gesture to support the WWF’s moment of positive action.

Thousands of businesses and millions of people are expected to switch off their lights for 60 minutes in a moment of global unity for nature restoration, shining a light on the planet, the climate crisis and the need for urgent change. The WWF’s global movement is now in its 19th year.

Taking the lead in central London, Piccadilly Lights will broadcast a five minute countdown to the switch off moment at 8.30pm before turning completely dark. The Lights, which only turn off during moments of national mourning, or in war, are participating with the agreement of Landsec.

The BFI IMAX in Waterloo, powered by 48,000 LEDs which were upgraded in 2024 to meet sustainability goals, reducing energy usage by 30%, will also switch off.

In addition, all 19 outdoor screens across both of the Westfield retail and leisure destinations will black out for the hour.

People can also take part in Earth Hour at home or in their communities, with activities such as tuning into nature’s soundtrack, meditating with nature, or supporting WWF’s conservation campaigns and citizen science projects.

Lisa Lee, executive director of brand, campaigns and communications, WWF-UK said: “Earth Hour is a moment for all of us to switch off from our busy lives, reflect, and reconnect with nature and the wellbeing benefits it provides. As landmarks, businesses, and individuals across the world turn off their lights, we can show our shared commitment to protecting the planet. This is also an opportunity to consider how we can take action as individuals and communities to restore nature and allow nature to restore us, during Earth Hour and beyond.”
