Netflix promotes latest season of ‘Black Mirror’ using viewer images
The streaming behemoth let users submit their own images to a website which were then used for the campaign.
Creating headlines is not uncommon for Netflix now, be it for its ever-popular shows or marketing campaigns for the same. Black Mirror, is a Netflix original show with each episode focusing on hypothetical dystopian realities that revolve around technology. The show became an instant hit when it first released in 2011, due its shock value and the unnerving nature of its episodes.
The show returned for its sixth season this week, and promoted one of the episodes titled ‘Joan is Awful’ with a rather chilling campaign. Netflix setup a mock streaming website called ‘Streamberry’ with a UI much like its own. The website allows users to upload their own photos and generate customized posters.
However, little did users know that they allowed Netflix to use their photos for promotional campaigns when they agreed to the terms and conditions. This saw many billboards across the UK with user generated posters calling them awful with the caption “______ is awful”.
Black Mirror’s latest season released worldwide on Netflix on 15th June.
