Alternative OOH media materials were barely used in the campaigns ahead of Maharashtra, Haryana assembly elections

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has notified the Election Commission of India that due steps are to be taken to ensure the political parties minimise the use of PVC flex for publicity purposes, be it on hoardings or as banner displays. NGT has also referred to the notice issued by the Ministry of Environment in January 2019 to the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories to encourage the use of alternative materials such as compostable plastic, natural fabrics, and recycled paper as media material for publicity campaigns.

NGT has advised the Election Commission and chief electoral officers to ensure the compliance of the political parties to the green imperative.
However, it was seen in the recent Maharashtra and Haryana state assembly elections that the campaigns were not run on alternative, green media.
