OpenTable turns unpaid motherhood into a giant OOH receipt in Melbourne

OpenTable has unveiled an emotional Mother’s Day OOH installation in Melbourne, Australia, transforming the invisible labour of motherhood into a towering restaurant-style bill suspended inside Melbourne Central.

Created by Melbourne-based agency 2045, the campaign titled The BillBoard reimagines a restaurant receipt as an emotional tally of everything mothers do over a lifetime, from “carried you” and “checked under the bed” to “loved you infinitely.” Every act appears repeatedly down the impossibly long bill, yet the final amount totals just $0.00.

Positioned inside one of Melbourne’s busiest shopping destinations during Mother’s Day week, the installation was designed to stop passersby with both scale and emotional contrast, using the cold, transactional language of a receipt to visualise something fundamentally priceless.

At the bottom of the installation sits the line: “You’ll never settle the bill. But you can pick up the next one this Mother’s Day.”

The campaign was created to encourage Australians to book Mother’s Day meals through OpenTable while giving the restaurant booking platform a more emotionally resonant role within the occasion. Rather than positioning dining as repayment, the campaign acknowledges the impossibility of ever fully accounting for maternal labour.
