In Toronto, Stella Artois turned a neighbouring Häagen-Dazs billboard into the setup for a playful OOH exchange, responding to “Let’s grab a pint” with a simple “Are you asking us out?”

A billboard doesn’t always have to speak on its own. Sometimes, the most effective way to make an OOH message stand out is to let another brand set it up.

That is exactly what happened in Toronto, where Häagen-Dazs put up a billboard inviting passersby to “Let’s grab a pint.” The catch? The pint in question was ice cream, not beer. Stella Artois spotted the opportunity and took the billboard right next to it, turning the two independent placements into what looked like a perfectly timed brand conversation.

Stella’s response was simple: “Are you asking us out?”

The placement worked because the two messages could be read together. Häagen-Dazs’ use of “pint” carried its own meaning, while Stella Artois could immediately claim the more familiar beer association. By placing its creative directly alongside the original, Stella effectively turned the neighbouring billboard into the first half of its own message.

The opportunity was entirely contextual. Stella Artois and its in-house creative team, draftLine, spotted the Häagen-Dazs campaign in Toronto and found available media space beside one of the billboards. There was no prior coordination between the two brands. Once the opportunity was identified, the response moved quickly, with the execution going live within a week.

The result is a good example of how proximity can become part of the creative idea. Stella did not need to explain the joke, build a new campaign platform or create a complicated interaction. The location did the work. Seen together, the two billboards read almost like a conversation between brands.
