IKEA puts the mess behind its tidy billboards

IKEA turns its outdoor advertising into a literal before-and-after, showcasing a picture-perfect room on the front and the everyday clutter behind it.

For a brand that has built its world around making homes more functional, IKEA has found a rather fitting way to bring that idea to the streets. In its latest OOH campaign in Sweden, the brand has turned the billboard itself into a demonstration of what it takes to keep a home looking tidy.

At first glance, the execution looks like a familiar IKEA advertisement: a clean, carefully styled room showcasing the brand’s products. But walk around to the back, and the picture changes completely. Hundreds of IKEA SAMLA storage boxes have been stacked behind the billboard, each filled with the everyday clutter that typically finds its way around a home — from toys, batteries and socks to unfinished drawings and other odds and ends.

The contrast is the campaign.

Rather than simply showing consumers the finished, organised home, IKEA has used the physical structure of the OOH installation to reveal the chaos that exists behind it. The front presents the polished version of everyday living, while the back exposes the mess that has been neatly — and quite literally — packed away.

The installations, placed across major Swedish cities, make the product part of the media environment rather than simply appearing within it. The SAMLA boxes are not just supporting the creative; they become the creative, turning an otherwise functional part of the billboard into a visual extension of the campaign message.
