Amul turns its billboard into a human pyramid for Janmashtami

A dahi-handi pyramid climbs right up Amul’s Janmashtami billboard, breaking open the matki on top.

Amul has marked Janmashtami with a clever outdoor ad that plays on the festival’s signature ritual – the dahi-handi human pyramid. The billboard itself carries the line “Maakhanchor Bane Mastikhor,” alongside artwork of a traditional matki overflowing with makhan, festive torans, a peacock feather, and a tub of Amul Masti curd, with a note that the product is available for delivery on Flipkart Minutes.

What makes the execution stand out is the extension below the billboard. A cut-out human pyramid of boys, styled like a dahi-handi formation, has been mounted running down the pole of the hoarding, as if the topmost boy is reaching up to break open the matki on the billboard itself. The pyramid effect turns a static billboard structure into a piece of street theatre, using the pole as part of the creative rather than just a support structure.

By tying the ad to a ritual so closely associated with Janmashtami, Amul manages to make a routine product hoarding feel festive and locally rooted, while also nudging quick commerce buying behaviour through the Flipkart Minutes mention. The wordplay in the headline, turning “Maakhanchor” (butter thief) into “Mastikhor” (mischief-maker) via the Masti product name, adds a layer of brand-specific humour to a widely recognised festival phrase.

The execution shows how adding a physical element to a standard billboard can turn a conventional outdoor format into a more engaging and attention-grabbing installation.
