From Spots to Impressions to Outcome: The Growth Path for Indian OOH

In this piece, first published in August 2026 edition of Outdoor Asia, installing digital screens alone is like manufacturing mobile phones without building the network. The real transformation begins when DOOH becomes an active part of the connected media ecosystem, says Srikanth Ramachandran, Founder and Group CEO, Moving Walls.

The Global Ratios: Where Do We Truly Stand?

Globally, Out of Home (OOH) advertising accounts for around 5% to 6% of total advertising budgets. In the world’s leading OOH markets, that share approaches 8% to 10%, making the medium a core pillar of brand communication. But where does India stand?

India’s advertising market reached approximately INR 1.5 trillion in 2025, with OOH contributing around INR 67 billion. This represents roughly 4.4% of total advertising spend. While the sector grew by an impressive 13%, we remain below the global benchmark. As India continues investing in world class transit infrastructure and premium urban environments, the question is no longer whether OOH will grow, but how it can claim a larger share of advertising investment.

Follow or Leapfrog?

India has rarely followed conventional paths. Rather than spending decades expanding copper landlines, we leapfrogged directly into the mobile revolution. OOH now faces a similar moment.

Instead of gradually digitizing static inventory, India has the opportunity to leapfrog into a connected, data responsive media ecosystem where Digital Out of Home (DOOH) is seamlessly integrated with the broader digital advertising landscape.

The Mobile Revolution for DOOH Digitization is already underway. DOOH now contributes around 18% of India’s OOH revenues and is expected to reach 25% by 2028.

But installing digital screens alone is like manufacturing mobile phones without building the network. The real transformation begins when DOOH becomes an active part of the connected media ecosystem.

DOOH is the only advertising medium that exists in real life. Every other digital channel is experienced through a personal device or algorithm. When DOOH and digital media work together in the right sequence, they amplify each other’s effectiveness. The opportunity lies not in operating screens independently, but in treating them as connected IRL media nodes that strengthen every digital campaign.

From Measurement to Outcomes

The industry has made significant progress, evolving from selling spots to trading impressions. That has been an important step, but impressions alone largely defend existing budgets. To attract the far larger digital advertising budgets, we must evolve from measuring delivery to measuring outcomes. The conversation should shift from “Does DOOH work?” to “What incremental value does DOOH create alongside Social, Digital Video and other connected media?”

The goal is to demonstrate that consumers exposed to DOOH respond more effectively to digital retargeting than those reached through digital channels alone. Once we can consistently prove incremental business outcomes, DOOH stops competing for OOH budgets and starts competing for digital budgets.

Brewing the Secret Sauce

This isn’t wishful thinking. The ingredients already exist. Google, Meta and other technology companies have released AI powered Marketing Mix Modelling (MMM) tools. Retail Media, ecommerce and quick commerce platforms are making transaction data increasingly available. Audience panels and digital behavioural research now provide the foundations for measuring cross channel effectiveness.

The opportunity lies in bringing these capabilities together by combining screen level impression data with modern MMM to quantify the incremental business outcomes that DOOH delivers across the media mix.

India has done this before. We transformed communications by leapfrogging directly into mobile technology instead of slowly expanding legacy infrastructure. OOH now has the opportunity to make a similar leap, moving from isolated screens to an intelligent, connected media network.

Yes, I may be a dreamer. But the path has never been clearer. If we embrace connected, AI powered, outcome driven OOH, the industry will not simply double over the next five years. It will redefine the role of outdoor advertising in India’s media landscape for the decade ahead.
