“The media business is like a sail boat”

Meenakshi Menon, founder of Spatial Access (part of Deloitte), drew some interesting parallels between sailing and running a media business and the life lesson therein while addressing the India Talks OOH conference on the theme of ‘Reimagining the specialist role in a fast changing media business environment’.

Drawing interesting parallels between a sailing on a small boat on the seas and running a media business, Meenakshi Menon, Founder of Spatial Access (part of Deloitte), held the attention of the audience in an engaging manner at the in person India Talks OOH conference held in Mumbai at Sahara Star on March 8.

Meenakshi as addressing the audience on the theme of ‘Reimagining the specialist role in a fast changing media business environment’ and talking about how the industry and the business could reinvent oneself give the current dynamics. In this context,  she shared her recent personal experience of sailing on a small boat on the seas.

Further comparing the experience of sailing to the current times that the industry is going through, she said, “The current environment is like the seas - unpredictable and hostile. So we  can’t make any mistakes.”

“Master the ropes, get deep into the business, keep your eyes open,  turn adversity on its head…”

Meenakshi further highlighted some external realities of our times and how they impact the OOH business. “Climate change is a reality and every business is impacted by it so we need to adapt.”

She summed up her presentation by reiterating the importance of these lessons learnt and applying them to the OOH business. As she said, “If you do these things, the sun will never ever set on our business because there is always an opportunity where there is a consumer.”
