ECI urges political parties to make local bodies election campaigning eco-friendly

By M4G Bureau - November 24, 2020

The apex body has mandated to use materials which are environment friendly and soil soluble materials such as cotton, paper or polyethylene for electioneering and mass campaigning

As Kerala is moving towards local body elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a strict notification to use eco-friendly materials during OOH campaigning.

All regional and national parties have been mandated to use materials which are environment friendly and soil soluble materials such as cotton, paper or polyethylene for electioneering and official mass campaigning. The apex body has strictly mentioned that plastic paper, plastic thread or plastic ribbons must not be used in election advertisements.

The ECI had issued a ruling last year ahead of Lok Sabha polls that political parties shall use eco-friendly media materials for their publicity campaigns. However, most of the campaigns were found to be executed on prohibited materials.

When the election commission raised this point in the latest meeting, the committee for District Sanitation Mission said that it happened because some of the debtors were unaware of what was being said in the law, while others, knowingly or unknowingly intervened at the organisational level and continued to violate the law at some places, in conversation with printing and outdoor firms.

Therefore, ECI urges to take necessary steps to transform the upcoming local body elections into an eco-friendly one. It has asked to remove existing installed banners printed on prohibited materials and the shops to be vigilant to avoid the hefty fines and license revocation that may otherwise be imposed.

On the violation of law by any defaulter, the ECI has also imposed fine: INR 10,000, INR 25,000 and INR 50,000.
