The much-awaited Chennai Metro Rail is set to be launched today. The first stretch of the network connects Alandur in the southern Chennai with Koyambedu, the hub that connects to the northern parts of the city. The 10-km stretch is entirely built overhead.

The line is likely to be extended to connect to the airport, further south. Once completed, the Rs 14,600-crore project would reportedly span 45 km and connect 32 stations.

The trains will have four coaches that can carry over 1,200 passengers. As a first of its kind, the Chennai Metro will feature an overhead luggage carrying rack.

The opening of Chennai Metro Rail will also open up a gamut of OOH advertising opportunities in the city. The Metro media will give advertising brands a compelling medium to connect with the audience in Chennai. This gains pre-eminence, especially since the city does not offer any significant large format outdoor media.

Metro networks in Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Hyderabad have successfully created a variety OOH media for advertising, including train wraps, station branding, and the like.
