Having started his career in OOH from Laqshya Media Group, Anup Jalan helped the eminent Madison Outdoor Media Services to come into existence in 2001 in partnership with Madison Communications. In 2004, Jalan was also a part of Dubai's high-decibel air-conditioned bus shelter projects. Associated with clients like All India Radio, Nestle, Zee, Nokia and Discovery among others, and having partnered with many outdoor agencies in the Middle East, Singapore and China, Anup Jalan is slated to impart his knowledge and expertise through his own venture APJ Enterprises, an advisory firm. In a candid chat with Outdoor Asia, Jalan takes us through his international experience with strong focus on the Indian market and gives us a sneak preview of his future plans.

What is the agenda for APJ Enterprises?

To act as an "Advisory Firm” and share my knowledge and expertise with individuals and organisations having futuristic outlook and desire to grow into market leaders in their chosen domain. APJ Enterprises has network of associates all over the world and will bring collective knowledge, expertise and valuable business contacts of all its associates to the forefront for the benefit of its clients.

Why is consulting the root to re-enter the market?

In fact, I had never left the market, it's just that I was doing my own little thing at Dubai from 2004 to 2010 and then I moved to Singapore and made my attempts at business there. In between, I was always in touch with my friends and colleagues in India. I relocated to India in June 2015 and now getting more active than before.
Besides, it is good way to start as an advisor, where in I can have the liberty to work with many small and medium size entities concurrently and share my knowledge and expertise to add value to their business not only in qualitative terms but also by way of quantifiable results and outputs.

At the same time, I can also invest my time and resources for developing concepts for overall benefit of the industry at large and will be happy to work in collaboration with industry bodies.

Which are the areas that APJ Enterprises can add value to?

APJ Enterprises intends to work with all sorts of clients in business sectors of mobile/digital advertising, OOH media ownership, OOH media services, education, real estate and infrastructure development.

We will be able to add value to our clients by
  • Developing strategic framework for long term sustainable growth plans
  • Guide them on gathering and organising all kinds of resources - talent, technology, strategic partnerships, financial investors etc.

On the whole, you can call us "Growth Architects”. APJ Enterprises will bring together ideas, strategy, technology and capital.

OOH industry is mostly entrepreneur driven, why do you think the consulting model will work?

I agree with your observation, and I am reasonably sure that advisory model will work. I will partner with selective clients wherein I believe that I can help them with their growth plans and take them to finishing line with in time bound manner.

Yes, I will also charge regular retainer ship fees from clients so that seriousness and commitment of client is on the table and at the same time, will be working on remuneration structure where in substantial part of my fee is tied up with quantifiable results achieved by clients.

In all, I had worked in the past for the success of my organisations, and I will now work for the success of my client's organisations. With my advisory model, I have liberty of choosing my clients based on the people and projects; that should make sense to me. Also these projects should be those where I can add value and work towards common goal to achieve anticipated success for my clients
