Chennai industry body welcome HC judgement on hoardings on private lands

By Bhawana Anand - March 12, 2020

The body plans to approach the municipal corporation for new bylaws

OOH business in Chennai sees a positive fallout from the Madras High Court judgement lifting the restriction on installation of hoardings on private lands or other places not falling under the jurisdiction of Chennai City Municipal Corporation. The High Court judgement states that interested parties may put up hoardings on private lands and railway lands after obtaining due permission from the urban local body.

The Chennai Hoardings Association had filed a case in the High Court against the amendment made by the local corporation stating hoardings can be installed only on the corporation’s land.

The Court in its judgement has observed that the municipal corporation will retain the discretionary power of awarding permission for putting up hoardings on private lands.

On this development, Ponnappan Venkatachalam, President of Chennai Hoardings Association told Media4Growth, “We are satisfied with the judgement that was pending for long. It is a positive outcome for our industry.”

The association is planning to approach the municipal corporation for new bylaws to be introduced on outdoor advertising, in sync with the new court judgement.
