Pantaloons adorned Kolkata streets with magnificent ‘Alpana’

By Ria Banerjee - September 22, 2017

Pantaloons engaged 300 students from prominent art colleges in Kolkata who created the alpana along with some 100 local residents.

Aditya Birla Group’s fashion and retail chain Pantaloons celebrates its 20-year relationship with the city of Kolkata by adorning the streets with the art of wonder – Alpana, the most unique and ethnic expression of the spirit of festivity. Toward this, Pantaloons engaged 300 students from prominent art colleges in Kolkata who created the alpana along with some 100 local residents.

Bold motifs in al vibrancy came to be created at the Samaj Sebi Sangha, Lake Road. Burger exterior emulsion was used to ensure the durability of the creations over the festive season. On the morning of Mahalaya, the festive atmosphere was further enlivened by the mystical sounds of Sonkho (conch) and beats of Dhaaks, drawing people to the streets.

“When Pantaloons offered us the creative concept of making alpana, we grabbed the offer. The alpana stretched from 15ft to 18ft encompassing an area of 1 km. This is the most breathtaking and memorable event to mark the auspicious occasion. We started working on the alpana a day before Mahalaya and finished off within a day. There were men and women beating the dhaaks and blowing the sankhas as a prelude to the main festival. Tollywood star Prasenjit Chatterjee and actors like Chandan Sen and Sabyasachi Chakraborty were present. At the end of the same day, it rained and the paint was washed off slightly but we replenished it later. This is the first time in the history of Kolkata that Pantaloons arranged such an event of grandeur and we are blessed and excited to make the city astounding,” said Arijit Moitra, General Secretary, Samaj Sebi Sangha, Lake Road Puja Committee.
